and people come from miles away
to wait in line, around the block, for a chance to pray

pictures pinned to the banner of the virgin
they’re here for help, but nothing’s certain
crucifix on the crutches against the wall
left there in hope in New Mexico

through the sand

at Santuario De Chimayo

They scoop the earth in little bags to take it with them
in hopes of bringing healing back
for their parents and children

past the shrine on the hilltop
